Gran Voyage Type: Item
Gran Voyage Name: A Righteous Spirit
Gran Voyage Location: Drum Island
Level: 2
Gran Voyage Description:
Bogart has only just recently ventured from his home on Lulusia. Having lived on a spring island, the young man was eager to see an island with a vastly different ecosystem. As an island well known for its harsh, endless winters, Drum Island seemed like the perfect place to visit first and enjoy snow for the first time in his life. However. his arrival on Drum wasn't as auspicious as he'd originally thought it would be.

The hunter had intended on easing into his first trip away from home by visiting a small town. Yet, because of the fact that this was a small town on Drum, it made the perfect location for a group of pirates to cause trouble. In a town too small to be economically important to the island, they received little help from the lordship or the Marines in uprooting the source of this villainy.

Taking up the mantle of a hero, Bogart takes it upon himself to shut down the Blue Shell Pirates and free the town of its pirate infestation.

The childhoods of young boys are filled to the brim with aspirations of being brave and strong. These children grasp at whatever's closest to help them reach their goals, emulating their favorite superheroes or world famous warriors - doing what they do to learn how to be men. But above any of these idols stands a father; the figure within a boy's life that is simultaneously the visage of punishment and kindness. For a child, there is no greater entity than that of a mother or father. Bogart was no different.

Chasing the image of his father - to be a hunter of creatures of the night just as he had - Bogie had to train every day in order to achieve at least the bottom level of his dream. Yet, a vigorous, structured training regimen passed on to him from his late father could only take him so far. Lulusia could only grant him so much before a sense of adventure and yearning to see the rest of the world would sweep the young man off his feet and force him from his childhood home. The only way Bogart could even fathom becoming a man on the same level of his father, Hideki, was leaving the the safety of his home and taking on the obstacles that the world would throw him. Only through legitimate struggle could he become what he wanted to.

Bogart's mother, a quiet woman, wanted to protect her son as a parent always does, but she'd raised him as a single parent after Hideki's passing. She knew just how strong Bogie's desire to be a hunter was and she knew that she couldn't deny her son the chance to grow and meet the world as it was. At some point, she had to let him do what he had to do. Even as Bogie left his childhood home, he would know that the door would be kept open for him in the chance that he should ever return.

His family is the battery that powered his resolve. He would use what they gave him, both love and strength, to make memories around the world. To take the knowledge they'd passed on to him to prove that hunters were needed and that creatures of the night would run rampant without them. Yet, even as this was his end goal, the desire to simply explore would be what truly set his route in stone.

He wanted to see things. He wanted to see snow. He needed to go to Drum.

OOC:
Having come from Lulusia a short time ago, Bogart had only succeeded in doing nothing noteworthy whilst on Drum. Due to an arguable sense of good nature, he'd suffered a net loss in his resolution of a theft by paying for the stolen items in spite of the fact that he'd found the culprits and shown his superiority. He wanted to help people, but his sense of justice was just as young and naive as his age would prove. However, while he was on Drum, he wouldn't deny himself the chance to see the island simply because he was on the lookout to do good things. Instead, that was precisely why he'd explore.

There were major kingdoms on the island, but those were the places that would have their own draw to them simply because they were hubs of activity. While there was nothing specific pulling him their way, he'd take his time to enjoy the smaller towns that the island had to offer. From town to town, Bogart simply trudged through the snow. His feet would freeze and the cold would slip into his body, but the young man did his best to hunker down in his new muffler and continue his walk each time. Assisted by the few carriages traveling between towns, the adventure would prove prosperous, if not hard at times.

Small towns were more representative of the economy of the island, but more than that - to Bogart himself - they were more reminiscent of the Common Grounds of Lulusia that he grew up in. People knew each other, everyone worked for their way of life, and the bigger businesses were all located within the larger kingdoms of the island. From his perspective, it made experiencing the island more fruitful and helped him acclimate to the new climate more intimately.

Yet, at the young age of 18 and not a drinker, there was little for him to do in regards to activities. He often found himself frequenting restaurants or volunteering himself to assist small businesses in securing their daily quotas. Aside from being a hunter, he had little in the way of what he wanted to do with his life. Rather than wandering aimlessly, he took his limitless energy and applied it in a way that let him experience the various jobs he could end up taking.

Fishermen were a huge portion of the food supply in small towns on a winter island and, as such, would hardly deny an extra hand. Shipwrights had plenty of work, even for someone with little experience in the trade. Blacksmiths had a lot to teach their apprentices, but there were things that they could use help for that didn't require a lot of time to teach. Even scientists, for the few that actually appeared on Drum, would find some use for him if he pleaded for the time. Every job he could get his hands on, he'd make time to try it as he ventured from town to town.

Above anything else, he became known as the wandering assistant. Although small, his name was spread to towns before he'd even get to visit them. This, of course, made his quest to experience life and their trades that much simpler.

Although Drum was a typically peaceful island, it wasn't exempt from the overarching power of the pirate era. The larger crews that could handle long voyages over the ocean didn't typically stop there, but smaller crews would use the island as a pit stop to restock on supplies or stretch their legs during their seafaring adventures. Even amongst pirates, the concept of not biting the hand that feeds was dominant - most crews choosing to take the kindness that was extended to them and continue on without much trouble. Yet, there were, of course, crews that couldn't abide by this rule and would make trouble to the various parts of the island they'd dock at.

The small island wasn't well equipped enough to handle frequent pirate invasions, relying on their participation in the World Government to absorb protection for its shores. Being a small island, Marine influence was big, but not nearly large enough to cover every corner, allowing for some crews to slip through the gaps and take up residence in the smaller towns. Small towns were left to fend for themselves until the pirate plague became large enough to convince Marines to deploy, putting hard times on its citizens until the day that happened.

Often times, in the event that a pirate crew did make base within a town on Drum, the citizens would bow their heads and pay their dues until the Marines were convinced to come. Small business owners and the low income families were forced to garnish their wages and pay a percentage of their profits to some crews. Buildings were vandalized, people would die, but they couldn't fight back on their own.

Having ventured across Drum - twice - and done many things, Bogart finally found himself in a small port town on the southern side of the island. As per the standard, he was walking to different parts of the town with the local news coo in hand looking for any job he could scrounge up. Being one of the smallest towns he'd visited, most of the job openings listed in the coo were filled rather quickly. His choices were growing slimmer and slimmer as the day wore on, but the young hunter wasn't too worried about it. Taking small side jobs was little more than an added experience for him. He wouldn't lose heart that easily.

Of the listings that Bogart had circled in the paper, a job as a fisherman had been one of them. The young man had had experience with working on fishing boats in the past and hadn't been able to get back out on the water in some time, so the opportunity appealed to him more than some of the others that he'd been able to do in various other towns. Resolving himself to apply, Bogie directed himself towards the port and walked through town. As he strode, he made sure to take note of the town he'd found himself in, taking in the scenery in the same way someone would take in the scent of a flower.

The housing on Drum was similar to what he was used to. Although different climates, Lulusia and Drum both primarily built their homes and businesses with brick and stone. Bogart wasn't an architect and couldn't note this himself, but it contributed to the sense of comfort the young hunter felt even though he was so far away from home. The people pacing through town were rushing back from place to place with conviction on their faces, none of them seeming to be fazed by the cold weather. Even though he'd been on Drum for some time, he hadn't been able to adjust to the climate nearly as well as he would have hoped, relying on a thick jacket and his new muffler to struggle through the cold.

The water came into full view as Bogart neared the port, walking along the dirt road and following the shoreline as he scanned over the various buildings. As he walked, the young hunter would continue to glance at the news coo in his hand, watching the markings on the buildings as he passed looking for the address in the listing. The fact that the town was so small made the task that much easier, as before long he found himself in front of the place he'd been looking for.

Taking a deep breath and resolving himself with the confidence needed to be interviewed, the young hunter moved to enter the building.

The bell on the door jingled loudly as Bogart entered the warehouse. The young man looked around, eyes turning on him in return, looking for the front desk or the man in charge. As he stood just inside the door, his search would be cut short when the man he was looking for introduced himself.

"Well hello." The man was shorter than Bogart, barely breaking the five foot threshold. His face was scruffy and his hair was gray, but through the weathered age of his face shined a bright smile. "How may I help you today?"

"He must not get very much face-to-face time with customers," Bogie thought to himself, returning a smile towards the man that'd greeted him. "Actually, I was wondering if you still needed help on the fishing boats." The young hunter held up the news coo in his hand as if the man would need a reminder of the company's own ad.

"Ah! Good! Do you have any experience with fishing?"

"Yes, sir," Bogie answered. Just as his mother and father had taught him, the young man kept his town respectful. "I used to fish with my dad all the time. I haven't been in a long time ago."

"Oh, sorry, I meant commercial fishing. Not with poles, but with nets."

"Oh, uh... No, not that I can recall. But I'm very much willing to learn and I'll work enough for two to make up for lack of experience."

The man he'd been speaking to let out a full belly laugh. "Well, to be honest, I can't be too picky. There's not many people to choose from. Unfortunately, I don't have any gear for you at the moment. However, if you come back in the morning, we'll have everything set up and you can join us on that run."

The young hunter had an excited, satisfied look on his face. Nodding, he said, "Thank you, sir! I will definitely do that."

Waving to each other, the two men said their goodbyes and Bogart began making his way back to the inn with a new hop in his step. The search for temporary work on Drum was far from difficult as long as he put in the footwork necessary. He could now get back on the water and learn a new skill to boot.

The sun hadn't even broken over the horizon when Bogart woke up the next morning. Outside of hunting for creatures of the night, there was little he did with his life that made something like a new job not exciting. The day would be devoted to learning how to commercial fish and readjusting to the life of a fisherman, even if it would only be temporary.

As he was going out fishing, the young hunter would be leaving the over-sized shotgun in his room, but he'd slot his hunter manual in its place in his back pocket and wrap his new muffler tightly around his neck before leaving. With one final check that he had everything, he closed the door to his inn room and began his walk towards the fishing warehouse at the port.

When Bogie arrived at his destination he was greeted with the same bright smile that had greeted him the day before. As promised, the equipment that would be necessary was also made available to him, including rubber boots and a raincoat.

"Thank you sir," Bogie stated, taking his gear and shuffling off to put them on. As he walked away though, the captain of the ship called back to him.

"We'll be leaving within the hour. We have a long day ahead of us!"

"I wonder how much we'll catch today, or if I'll be any use." Bogart was excited, but his thoughts were filled with worries just the same. He'd try his best even though he hadn't ever done fishing quite on this level before.

Bogart D. Weiss

The ship he was directed towards was well prepared for a day full of fishing. The deck was cleaned nicely, the tanks ready for storage, and all of the nets had been untangled and set up to be cast when necessary. The crew was prepared as well - each of them wearing the same raincoat and rubber boots that Bogart had been given on arrival. The difference between these men and Bogie, however, was the age worn into their face. He was the youngest man that'd be on the ship by far, but he wouldn't let that get to him. If he didn't have the experience, as promised, he'd beat them with energy and tenacity.

The ship set out within the hour, as instructed. As soon as they left port, the chill in the Drum Island air became prominent. The energetic ocean air constantly pushed a cold breeze over the deck, chilling every member of the crew to their bone, but not enough to stop them from bringing in the food and getting paid. The water was choppy, throwing cold waves over the deck every now and then and convincing Bogart how necessary the rubber boots and raincoat actually were. Without them he'd be soaked to the bone and sliding all over the place.

The first net was cast when Drum was a speck in the distance. Several men were needed to do the job. Two men were there to stretch the net out to the side and throw it overboard as the ship sailed by, with a few more lining the length of the net to guide it off and prevent it from getting tangled within itself before it could do its job. Not a single person on the crew didn't have a job to do or was an unnecessary extra hand, with Bogart even able to make himself useful in spite of being new.

The most important job on the ship was the man reeling in the nets. There was an arm attached to the deck that assisted in pulling up the huge weight of fish that were snagged, but the job was important because if the rope became tangled or snapped due to carelessness, hundreds of pounds of fish would be lost and several hours of work as well. The young hunter fantasized about being important enough to do that job, but he knew that he didn't have any real desire to be a career fisherman either.

Bogart did learn a valuable lesson while he was out on the water. The importance of his raincoat and rubber boots had made themselves immediately important, but there was one item that wasn't provided that would have made his life much better. A pair of proper, water-resistant gloves. The nets that came back in or that would be recast were soaking wet, chilling the young man's hands to the bone the longer he had to work in the frozen climate. It hadn't been obvious when they first set out, but it looked like the rest of the crew had learned their lesson long ago and each of them wore a pair of thick, rubber gloves as well.

He wouldn't let this get to him though. In order to keep himself warm, he'd work twice as hard. Stretching his hands out and huffing as he worked, Bogart continued to work hard while the crew was still willing to fish.
