Lead continued to pound the tree rind, yet the shots were lessening at the lack of movement as if to bait him out into the open or maybe doubts forming on his position. Although from his vantage point he couldn’t see much of what was happening below, the shrieks of pain that rose gave him a clear image of how the tide of battle lay currently. A few more stray shots panged off the tree, digging deep into the wood.
Renero pushed his knees forward, putting his weight onto the tree, the shot up trunk splintering as he slowly rose on his haunches, his claws pulling out from trunk; his paws digging deeper in the bark as sized the fall downwards. A risky maneuverer, but better than facing the gunfire head on. At the end of the day, he got promoted for “ingenuity”, not simply for staying alive; albeit his death would be a great hindrance would he want to progress further up the marine ranks.
The sway of the tree turned into a fall before Renero could jump down; his weight too much for the mangled tree to bear. The conifer cut down through the mists as it made its way downwards towards the thatch roof of the hut below, Renero riding the trunk as if was a drawbridge, his body tensed to the strength of iron. The ramshackle shack offered little resistance, exploding in a puff of twigs and splinters; the unlucky rifleman who didn’t have the foresight to jump out the windows crushed into a crimson pulp.
