Voyage Prompt:
OOTD:
Lu Dahn looked outwards from his position on his ship, the Enforcer. What his eyes rested upon was the capital of Alabasta, Alubarna. If one lived under a rock, at first glance the city could be seen as a peaceful one. Even at the docks, there was bustling foot traffic, people out and about shopping, beautiful women in their culture's garbs. The sight was very easy on the eyes, but behind the veil was a Kingdom that was in turmoil. Nobles fled the palace every day. Some couldn't take the chaos, others went to establish new Kingdoms, and a few just wanted to get away from the palace, before their evil deeds caught up to them. For Nobles were just fleeing the palace every day. No. Some Nobles from the palace were dying every day. In the Kingdoms weakened state, some saw it as a chance to climb the ladder of power. May they be Nobles themselves or people looking to get a piece of the pie that seemed to be for the taking.

From the docks, Lu Dahn's topaz eyes lingered on the palace that was far off in the distance. "Sir." Lu Dahn calmly turned to his Ensign that was addressing him. For the first time since he embarked on the Fool's Gold campaign, he had company aboard his ship. His presence and activity on Sandy Island had been officially logged by the big wigs on Marineford, so he was sent back his original Unit, albeit some had been adopted into other Units during the down time. Forde, Orson, Mica, Lawson, and Hyde. These were his five Ensigns, last time he saw them they were all petty officers. He was happy to see that they had also been busy.

Currently in front of him was Orson. "The preparations are complete?" Orson nodded to him and Lu Dahn glanced behind the Ensign. The other four Ensigns were working to clean the deck of the Enforcer, but Orson had been working to set up for the Commodore's meeting. Two new prospects for the G-6 Unit. One was Ensign Emanuel D. Angelov. A gifted Navigator and someone said to have a curious nature for his habit of thumbing through Marine records. His talent as a Navigator made him desired by Lu Dahn, but also having someone on his side that could swim through records was extremely nice.

Next was Marine Captain Vane. A very promising individual who was best recognized for his fiery passion and his fiery Devil's Fruit. Lu Dahn needed a strong willed individual to help guide and mold his Unit. Currently he had Captain Uchis by his side as well, but as of late he was working on his own personal assignments. Ricchi had no qualms with this, but with another Captain, one with a strong character at that, assigned to his Unit, the leadership he could potentially bring would help carry them through the trials and obstacles that'd be in their way.

What Lu Dahn was plotting to build was something he projected to be great. This was a given though, for all things he put his effort into came out great. Nonetheless, no one had acknowledged his Unit yet. This wasn't because they were lack luster, but because they had failed to officially embark on an assignment or Campaign as a Unit. After bringing in all of these pieces, their debut would take many by storm. He knew in no time, they'd suddenly become a force to be reckoned with.

"It looks great. Thank you Orson." Ricchi smiled at the Ensign as he stepped passed him to approach the setup. For starters, the deck was spotless save for what belonged on it. It'd be a great first impression, but then the meeting area that had been setup was perfect. It was a classic wooden round table that one would see at a cafe. Three comfortable chairs were placed around it, one at the twelve o'clock position of the circular table, then one between 4 & 5 o'clock and another between 7 & 8 o'clock. These chairs were for the prospects of course and there'd be no doubt about for Lu Dahn had walked over and taken a seat in the 12 o'clock chair. Beneath the chairs and table was a decorative rug spread out. It was a regal looking piece that had cherubs resting and gazing towards the center of the piece where the table was. It may seem out of place, but it would do well to convey what type of person Lu Dahn was to both the prospects the moment they came aboard the Enforcer. Lastly on the table was a pitcher of water, three cups each filled with water, and a small floral piece.

OOD Rug10

By sitting down, he felt he could mentally transport himself to the studies of his family's estate back on Water 7. Orson had just purchased the rug today from a bazaar vendor for the occasion, so it made it all the more special. Grabbing his pocket watch out his pocket, he flipped the piece open to read the time. 13:27 The two were told to arrive at 13:30 on the dot, not earlier and especially not later, so now Lu Dahn would patiently wait. His Ensigns were done with their duties, so they just mingled on the deck. Forde, Micah, and Hyde played cards on a table on the other end of the deck. Orson was reading a book and Lawson was cleaning his rifle. Lu Dahn was content with how this moment felt for he felt he recently was in a rather dark space having to deal with the entire Fool's Gold campaign by his lonesome. Emotionally he felt very drained, so during this interview with Emanuel and Vane, he was hoping their character had revitalizing qualities about it. They were aware they were being interviewed, but what they were walking into was probably completely different than what they expected.

"All losses in this world are due to a lack of ability."
A desert island, without a shadow of a doubt, wouldn't have been his first choice of places. The aridity and heat were anathema to him and he otherwise had a hard time finding anything else he liked even remotely. In hindsight, arriving early wasn't exactly the best decision he had ever made. It wasn't that he didn't feel anything for this place though; it was in dire straits with a whole host of problems needing a response, from terrorist attacks to attempted coups.

Than again, what else was there for him? Despite any protest he could have raised, he had been on standby and was just to help pad the number of personnel stationed at a few bases and do the navigating for some escorts before he finally had the idea to formally request reassignment. Upon thumbing through the latest memos, he had come across a curious little notice about a regiment that was still looking for more personnel. It was little known and so had few enough willing to work for them.

Maybe it was his face and the fact that he didn't really have the look of someone who could be all that impressive? He certainly lacked the big muscles of some Marines, though some Marines had told him that his skills made the trade-off worth the lack of bulk.

Nevertheless, expecting him to keep up appearances here was a tall order indeed and he had awoken that morning with a heavy stomachache. Being in this place had to have done a number on just his health in general. He found it a bit difficult to eat the food out here, although had never considered himself to be a picky eater. Even going through with preparing his own meals, food supplies seemed to get lost with all the troubles of the island.

Was it maybe a case of the nerves? The young man was undoubtedly excited for this opportunity and perhaps he simply couldn't help the build-up of all this anxious energy. He ruled that thought out with a muted shake of his head as he walked towards the docks from a small alley with two colorful stands selling a small though bountiful selection of produce.

He was confident; Emanuel hadn't neglected his preparation for this occasion and had looked carefully before deciding to commit. His readings had left him with a rather good impression and he was certain he could handle what was in store, even while not looking or feeling at his best 100 percent. He was dressed in his navy blue marine's outfit with a black tie, though he had elected to leave his shoulder guards off the uniform. His hair was combed and neat as usual, though a bit speckled from the sand and wind.

Turning his mind to other things as he neared the rendezvous point and thinking his bug would pass eventually, he decided to empty his head for the moment and just try to enjoy himself on the walk down. The few people passing by were of distinct color and he couldn't say unattractive. Despite Sandy Island not having all the amenities he would've liked, it was rich with culture and it was hard not to appreciate the diversity on some level.

As he neared the ship of his destination, Emanuel gave a standing salute and introduction. "Ensign Emanuel Angelov." The two officers returned the salute before parting their weapons to allow him entry and he calmly climbed aboard.

Right at the top and stationed right smack in the center of the ship deck was a rounded table atop what looked to be a rather exotic rug complete with angelic designs. It maybe could have been made on this very island, though to him it looked like it had come from some other place with richer resources.

A man sat at the foremost of the table and Emanuel stayed off to the side, neglecting to take his seat to project courtesy unless beckoned.

Note: Maybe not 110% my best work, but I hope to soon grab a hold of Emanuel's character XD. I can hopefully still write well even after such a long break. I had hoped for this to be longer, but I made it as best I could.

Lu Dahn's attention would be drawn as his Ensigns were naturally moved to the ladder of his ship. Someone had approached and judging by the time it was his prospects. His Ensigns granted the person access to board, then went back to their leisure activity as the lone Emanuel was left on Lu Dahn's deck. Quickly the Marine's eyes had found Lu Dahn and Lu Dahn offered him a gentle smile to ration him what comfort he could. Scooting out from his seat, he would stand up and approach the Navigator. He was awfully short to be 3 years Lu Dahn's senior. He liked being taller than this person, small things like that made Lu Dahn feel well about himself. That alone would tell someone the type of person he was, but it was evident that that is what he was thinking as he approached the Navigator.

The entirety of his short travel he had his smile on and when he'd come to a gradual and non-staccato stop, he'd offer the man his hand. "Commodore Ricchi. Pleased to meet you Ensign Angelov. A Marine Captain was scheduled to be joining you for your interview, but it seems that he has more important matters to tend to." Lu Dahn step forward one step while his other foot stayed in place, his weight leaned forward. This allowed him to look directly over the Navigator's head as he used his able hand to shield the sun's rays from his eyes. Only a few seconds were dedicated to this scan he gave the docks, before he leaned and stepped back to where he was before. His eyes shifted back down to Emanuel's and he put his smile back on. "Such is life I suppose." He gave a mundane shrug and the man who's name he couldn't even remember at the moment was supposedly forgotten.

After his shoulders dropped, he turned and simultaneously beckoned with his right hand for Emanuel to follow. "So how was your journey to Sandy Island? You weren't here until now correct?" His Ensigns were steady occasionally peeking up at Angelov. Not only observing him, but also chuckling to themselves for they each reminisced on their "interview" with Lu Dahn. Lu Dahn would look back at Angelov as he walked towards the table. Should he notice the man paid any mind to his Ensigns he'd address it after turning his attention back forward. "Allot them none of your attention. They're just excited to have someone new aboard. We don't get company often."

Approaching the table, Lu Dahn would motion to either of the chairs that were closer to one another for Emanuel as he'd walk to his own seat and sit down. Once Emanuel was seated Lu Dahn would take his glass of water in his hand and take a shallow sip. His focus was on the glass, as to not spill it. Setting the glass back down he'd lock eyes with Emanuel. His gaze wouldn't falter. His sharp bird like topaz eyes, would try to reach through Emanuel's own pupils to the depths of his soul. It would also be very evident that the stare Lu Dahn was giving the Ensign wasn't just a casual instance of eye contact. Even as he would speak, his eye contact would persist. "Do you believe in fate Ensign Angelov?" If the Ensign answered no, Lu Dahn's mouth would scrunch to the side in disappointment. He wouldn't hold it against him, but Lu Dahn always found it hard not to be a believer in fate and other superstitious things. "That's a shame, but understandable. What is it that you are looking to gain by enlisting as a part of my Unit?"

If the Navigator replied yes, Lu Dahn's gaze would soften and a blissful smile would develop. "Why is it that you think fate has brought you here?"

"All losses in this world are due to a lack of ability."
Fate huh. As Emanuel followed his superior's lead and sat at the table, he was already and very carefully starting to study him as if to find something hideous he knew to be there. There was the difference in their respective statures of course, a fact that led him to leave an invisible sigh before sitting down. It was just commonly accepted that he was bound to be at a disadvantage in that department. Not that he wouldn't mind growing a bit taller, but it was out of his control and so he didn't worry about it.

A shagged head of light, crystalline blue hair and he walked with a windy sway in his step before stopping to outreach for a handshake. Up-close, Emanuel noted his overbearing presence and the very 'sleek' posture that seemed like it could smother him. Emanuel likewise took the man's grasp and shook firmly before they were to be seated and the official questioning began.

Emanuel took the closer seat and made himself comfortable before speaking. "The ride wasn't bad, though a bit rough at some parts." On the side, he did share a glance or two with the others sharing the deck with them, though took the advice and went back to his thoughts. It made it easier for him to remain in his poise: calm, fluid, and calculating.

The smile that appeared on his lips bordered on smug, though it veiled the effort and thought he was emitting as he considered the man's subsequent question. Did he believe in fate? That was something he hadn't exactly expected to be on the questionaire, but it didn't take him long to compose a response in his head.

"I do happen to believe in Fate. That would be the simplest answer to your question." Emanuel's face remained a polite mask as they progressed, occasionally lifting away to flicker at the water. He had already noticed that they were both not letting up with the eye contact and that the world around them had seemingly receded into a sea of white space. It was almost eerie and rather creepy, so the Fishman decided he needed to be a bit more conscious so as not to be considered rude.

"To elaborate however, let me ask something of you: Would you say that you yourself believe in free will? That those who are living have the freedom to make their own choices?" Emanuel's chin rested on the palm of his hand that was supported by his elbow on the table. His neck craned to the side curiously, wondering with such intense eagerness as to his answer. He kept his gaze this time and trained it on Lu Dahn.

One thought did occur to him: he couldn't deny that the man had a certain quality about him. His smile and stature all seemed to have a rather commanding aura, if not a bit too far with the eye contact. It made him think that maybe the superior officer was the one who was nervous about this interview. He had only read second-hand reports about him and made his decision off of third-hand information, but the words had not done it justice.

The conversation continued, though Emanuel didn't abate and kept his mask locked tight. By habit, he was conscious of the fact that he wasn't able to keep entirely still. His left hand either twirled through the air or it occasionally finger-walked over to the side to pour himself a glass of water if it was offered. For the most part, he managed his eye contact judiciously, periodically averting his gaze on occasion, either to drink or to blink and re-focus himself.

In considering his next response with care, he found that he hardly needed to think before an answer appeared to him. He flexed and drummed his fingers and hands over and under each other as he spoke. "I would like to be a part of G-6 because I believe I can be of more value here than in any other unit. I want to be led by somebody as ambitious as I am and who isn't afraid to take risks and who puts their money where their mouth is. That is why I'm here and why I think Fate has placed me in this spot."

Lu Dahn was happy to hear that the Ensign walked a similar path as him when it came to Fate. It was important to align oneself with those who had similar values, so one could be honed to be their best self. While hanging with various colored individuals made one well cultured and versed, Lu Dahn liked all his colors to at least have one thing in common.

Quickly Ensign Angelov had found himself too comfortable. Lu Dahn saw bits and pieces of his younger self in the Ensign when he fixed his mind to ask his superior such a silly question with his head titled to the side in a cheeky manner. His smile wouldn't fade despite being unsatisfied with Emanuel's question. Instead he'd listen to the Ensign's question, his brows raising in interest as it was spun together. A light head nod or two would be the cherry on top as it seemed he'd be considering an appropriate and fitting answer for the question he already knew the answer to. Then he'd steer the conversation elsewhere in such a manner that Ensign Angelov would surely understand what type of person Lu Dahn was. Or at least he'd have a clue.

He'd lead with a pondering hand brushing his chin, before the atmosphere would change from his words. "Pardon me, but as Commodore, I'll be the one asking the questions. And as a candidate for my Unit and an Ensign, you'll be the one answering." Lu Dahn's smile would persist for a moment until his focus would be drawn from the Navigator to his cup of water on the table. He'd grab the cup and bring it up, but not all the way to his lips just yet. "Please help yourself to both if you wish. It doesn't seem the second candidate will be joining us." Then he'd take his second sip of water and set his glass back down.

"Moving on . . ." His gaze would be lax and calm, the childish guise he put up before of being overly cheerful now in the past. He wondered how the Ensign would take to his previous lashing though. It was nothing major, in fact it was a test. Would he scramble to apologize and make up for his "mistake" and save face, would he take offense to Lu Dahn's actions and see him as an egotistic and rank driven clown, or perhaps he'd take another route. Lu Dahn's money was on the latter, nonetheless it'd be a fun time seeing how it panned out and seeing how Angelov ticked.

More than often, most were thrown off their game for the remainder of the interview. They'd scramble and overcompensate in apologies, some just fumbled over words and continuously second guessed their responses and when to respond. One has even crumbled from anxiety and broken down in tears in front of Lu Dahn.

It's true he's a pretty trivial person, but this was beyond speaking out of rank. It was about being able to keep one's own tempo and not be tripped up by speed bumps. Did this Ensign have the mental resilience? If he was like Ricchi predicted, the Commodore's past self, he'd be secretly writhing with anger and imagining how good his hands would look around the interviewers neck. He'd still flawlessly nail the interview however.

While saying "Moving on." Lu Dahn's eyes would have went downwards to the carpet that framed their small meeting setup. "Tell me. What do you like more. This carpet or this floral piece. I personally like the floral piece more." After mentioning the carpet, he'd look and move his hand to the floral piece that was on the table and in between him and Angelov. It wasn't anything too special, but it couldn't be said that it wasn't a beautiful arrangement of flowers. The colors blended well and were native to Sandy Island. Those not indigenous would surely be a fan, but the same could be said for the carpet. Lu Dahn's hand would be found underneath the petals of one of the flowers gently brushing it and bumping it up with a single finger. Something about making physical contact with flowers made him feel more connected with nature and the earth. His eyes would find their way back on Angelov, obviously curious to hear his response. I wonder if that was too obvious? He thought to himself.

All this wouldn't take as much time as it seemed. The situation would progress at a rather natural pace, not much space between two piece of speech, though much minuscule detail and thought was inhabiting and living in every moment.

"All losses in this world are due to a lack of ability."
Emanuel's face remained smiling and his fingers didn't cease in their drumming and maneuvering. His right elbow on the table supported the palm that held his chin while his left hand went about its way. The aura seemed to change in a moment as any momentum he had was shut-out.

Just like that, Emanuel felt Lu Dahn shutter him in a polite-sounding tone of voice, though he wasn't upset or even slightly dismayed at how stern of a rebuff he received. As a matter of fact, the manner in which he was rebuked gave him reason to smirk and chuckle a little bit. It seemed like he had expected being told off to faze him in some way. Any career-oriented officer would certainly be more interested in making amends for speaking out of turn and causing offense to a superior, but the half-fishman had no such fear in him. There was reason for his reputation as a 'Trickster' after all.

Emanuel hadn't succeeded in changing the nature of their conversation. The balance of power between them hadn't shifted, but if this was a contest between the two of them taking the other's measure, than perhaps he had at least won some small victory in return. It was his commander who had been forced to give something up; he had given some insight as to what kind of a man he was dealing with. He had given an answer whether he meant to or not, even in just reaffirming their respective positions. A bit had still gone unsaid between them in the exchange.

Of course, he had needed to unveil himself as well and he was wary of going too far with his offense, though was quick to decide on his next two responses. With the water in hand, he reached for a glass. "Don't mind if I do." Tipping the pitcher gently, he poured himself a small glass before resuming focus.

It might have made the other ensigns nervous thinking over what was going on between them. Either that or they had already known this would happen. Emanuel took a spare look to the sides, gauging their reactions. None of them seemed expressly surprised and gave him little to no information of even minuscule participation.

With an inward scoff and sigh, Emanuel was at peace and retained his calm. At the next question, Emanuel actually had to shake his eyes over to even realize there had been a floral piece in front that hadn't really drawn his attentions. In truth, both seemed rather unnecessarily gaudy, though he liked the carpet more than the arrangement of flowers. In his opinion, they detracted from the overall decor. His tongue clicked against the top of his mouth before speaking.

"The rug. The flowers match well with the island, although wouldn't you think they're a bit gaudy to be placed on a ship like this?" Leaning forward, his lips unfurled and his expression weakened to a point where it was little more than a friendly smile. As if they could be just two friends playing cards.

Too gaudy for a ship? Lu Dahn shamelessly brought a hand up to his mouth as he chuckled lightly. He was humored by Emanuel's response. It was becoming clear running him down the beaten path wasn't going to show Lu Dahn much about his character. The Navigator had a good head on his shoulders and a mouth that always spoke what the mind thought. Lu Dahn was definitely enjoying the interview portion thus far. Seeing Emanuel's expressions as he retorted back to Lu Dahn was also something he enjoyed. While Lu Dahn wouldn't like to see the sass directed to him in the future, should this process result in Emanuel being taken in by G-6, for now it'd pass because Lu Dahn was giving him the same energy. "They're gaudy, but each of these pieces are catalyst in a way. They seem out of place, because they are meant to draw you elsewhere mentally. But that's a talk for another day perhaps." As he came upon his last sentence, his attention had gone from Emanuel to Orson who was playing cards. "Ensign Ravel." "Sir?" Orson looked to his Commodore, stood and approached. Before he could come all the way over Lu Dahn spoke again. "Have everyone get outfitted for the escort mission." Originally Lu Dahn's Ensigns were supposed to stay with him. The Marine Captain prospect and Emanuel before him would have been enough on paper since there would have been a Captain present. Since that was no longer the case Lu Dahn couldn't send this Ensign on the task by his lonesome.

"I was going to interview you for longer, but there's honestly no need to. Held in the light of an Ensign you show you're knowledgable beyond your rank. You carry yourself in a casual setting well and though I was a bit catty, whether you were bothered or not, you held your head. You're also not a yes man, something I personally can't stand to be around." Lu Dahn had come to a stand as he spoke. This time his smile at Emanuel was a more genuine smile. "There's still more to it than that of course, but I feel what's most important is that one has a good head on their shoulders. The last thing you'll be doing may be a curve ball of sorts, but I have an assignment for you." Lu Dahn slipped his hand in the inner pocket of his suit jacket and handed Emanuel a slip of paper.

Mission Statement wrote:G-6
Minister Foillinger and Baron Reis have called for the services of the G-6 Marine Unit to escort them and their families from the Royal Capital, Alubarna, to their ship on Nanohana. Alubarna has been the proving grounds of many pirates looking to accumulate bounty by committing crimes against what royals and nobles remain. For that reason the journey is dangerous and caution should be taken throughout the entirety of the travel. Once they board their respective boats, they are no longer your responsibility. Report back to Sail the Enforcer to Commodore Ricchi on Water 7 once your mission is complete.

"Originally a Marine Captain was supposed to interview with you, but it seems fate will have you face this trial on your own. Well . . . I shouldn't say on your own. Hahah. I'll be sending my five Ensigns with you and they'll be looking to you for direction. Consider it a test within a test I guess. Nonetheless. My goodness I'm speaking in rhymes." He laughed at himself, the whole time he was talking he was pacing the deck. Not in a hysterical manner, but as many speakers did out of habit. "But nonetheless, ensure none of my men are returned to me in a state they were not dispatched in." It was when he said this that he turned very serious for a moment. How he looked in Emanuel's eyes was an attempt to communicate there'd be serious consequences should this condition not be met. "Also, while on this assignment I want you to ponder on what your own duty to yourself is. We all serve the World Government as Marines, but a man should also serve himself and see his own personal desires fulfilled. Return to me on Water 7 using this boat since you are a Navigator and when we meet there, I'll be curious to hear what you've come up with as an answer." Lu Dahn would have stopped his pacing and would have been standing in front of Emanuel. He had high hopes for the Navigator, he just hoped he wouldn't be made a fool.

With timing that was guided by fates hand, after Emanuel said any piece he had to or if he didn't, after the speaking between the two was done, Lu Dahn's five Ensigns would come from below the deck outfitted and ready for the assignment. All five of them were lined up in front of Lu Dahn and Emanuel looking like the good soldiers they were. Three had sabers equipped to their hip and two had rifles bound by slings drawn to their backs. Orson had the addition of a suitcase in his hand. "Ah, you didn't forget. Thank you Orson." Lu Dahn approached Orson and took his suitcase from his hand. "Well, I'll be taking my leave." Lu Dahn would walk to Emanuel one last time, set down his suitcase, then extend a hand to him. "I'll be taking a Sea Train to Water 7, remember what we talked about." With a parting smile he'd grab his suitcase and take his leave, but as he got to the boarding ladder he paused. "Also, I've been hearing more reports than usual about the waters around here being brimming with pirates following the whole battle on Cactus Island. Those Nobles are bound to be attacked on their way out to sea. You aren't obligated to help them with that, but it ties back to your own sense of duty. I'll be excited to hear the details of this assignment once we rendezvous on Water 7. Ciao!" Finally, he'd take his leave by jumping from the deck of the ship down to the boardwalk of the dock. With one arm in a cast and the other hand holding his suitcase, using the ladder was out of the question anyhow.

Emanuel watched and listened keenly as his superior issued the assignment, a simmering glint in his eye that soon began to grow. Being without a captain for this assignment could be troublesome, but on the other hand it was also a major opportunity to prove himself.

His excitement flared and he had to fight to contain himself. This was a big deal; to be entrusted with a ship and several subordinates under his command wasn't a job many would expect to be given to only a mere ensign. His heart jumped to life for a few pulse-pounding beats and his fingers writhed in anticipation. This would be the first step to proving himself. Succeed at this, and he would be one step closer to a promotion or maybe two.

As the man moved to the edge for his leave, Emanuel raised his hand to his forehead in a righteous salute. "I won't forget it and I promise that I will do you proud!" There was little time to waste.

Soon, he was alone with the 5 ensigns that Lu Dahn had left under his command: Ensigns Forde, Orson Ravel, Mica, Lawson, and Hyde. At their helm was an untested piece of raw talent that was Emanuel D. Angelov. It was still barely after the peak of high noon with the sun hanging high over their heads. The nobles were bound to arrive within the next hour or so. Their interview really hadn't gone as long as expected so he would need to use this time wisely.

Immediately, Emanuel started his directing and figuring out what he had been handed. To make this work, he would need to assign each of them to the stations that suited their strengths and then create a system to keep them working together harmoniously. If pirates really were infesting the waters ahead of them, he would need to be quick on his feet and make snap decisions in a pinch.

Buckle up. This was going to be a bumpy ride.

"WHAT do you MEAN there is going to be a delay?" Emanuel was aghast with anger and sweating; they had just spent the last 45 minutes preparing the ship for departure and he had gotten himself situated with each of the Ensigns. For the most part, they had hit it off and had devised a work-able system of sorts.

At the top of the hour, their clients had just started arriving, but then a portly man trudged aboard, looking short of breath and in bad shape. His left arm was wrapped up by a cast. "My apologies, but... we're just not ready yet. Rio-san is not able to go yet! Reis' brother also was supposed to be here... but his son Rio is still in no shape to travel! They were ambushed a few days ago and we thought their injuries would have healed by now.... but the wound has become infected..." The man's voice came in-between raspy breaths.

Emanuel was left to stand in the middle of the Enforcer's deck as the family of Minister Foilinger had already arrived and were reading themselves for the day-and-a-half long trip. His eyes retreated and he was still, hands grasping his chin. His brain worked quickly, thinking hard and going over options.

"How long do you think this will be delayed?" The man before Emanuel had to catch his breath and think for a moment. "He said... a couple days. Just enough for the boy to recover in good care. The physician treating him said..."

Before the rest of the sentence had left his lips, there was already a stark outcry from the Foilinger family. "You go back and tell that blathering idiot that we can't wait around for ONE more minute! Our lives are in danger and we're not waiting around and risking our lives and reputations! Both of our families agreed to be here in full at this very hour!"

There was chest thumping and the ensigns began to be the ones in control of calming everybody down while Emanuel worked. Baron Reis was one of the clients after all and it was his duty to see them to safety, but this made matters complicated quickly. Emanuel grit his teeth before coming out of his deep think and pushing his way through the small crowd. "I'll see if I can go and persuade them to come out. We can't hold up everybody for a day. Can you come with me?"

Emanuel gestured at the man who had arrived out of breath, having the ensigns pick him up and push him forward to join the younger navigator. His hesitation was easily visible, but he complied. "Keep everyone settled. This shouldn't take long and we sail as soon as I'm back."

With his guide in tow, he was escorted back from whence they came through the port of Alubarna back towards the residential district. Or what was left of it after the recent string of raids on the nobility. With all haste, he was brought through a white-washed Alubarna estate to a small bedroom in the farthest corner.

It was modest in terms of the spacing and compared to the rest of the place. The curtains were magenta in color and from what he could guess, made of silky velvet. There was a mirror on the side and a bureau beside the bed where the boy sat up against a pillow cushion. The window overlooked a small courtyard.

Emanuel stood there for a moment, transfixed. Because the boy sitting there wasn't what he had expected. He'd been prepared for some level of injury, but he hadn't expected that the boy had lost both of his legs.

He stood there, unsure at first of what to think. Emanuel's eyes glazed over as the doctor knelt beside the bed and turned a half-eye to the new arrivals. "Please, do be quiet, the boy needs his rest. I thought I sent Ivan-san to tell you that the boy is not yet ready to travel..."

Both of them had matching styles of disheveled glossy white hair. The doctor was old, wrinkled, and his eyes faded behind darling gold spectacles. The boy was bruised and battered around the face, looking pitiful and frail. Though his arms remained, it seemed like someone had stomped on them harshly. On the butt of his shoulder, was a new portion of wrapping that Emanuel guessed was to staunch the bleeding from gunshot wound.

Emanuel's heart wretched. "I'm sorry... but we can't delay departure. The pirates grow more active with each passing day and I don't have the manpower or the ability to protect everyone here. We have to go now; there is no safe place here." Even as the words crossed his lips, he was surely questioning himself and the decision he was about to make. As expected, as Emanuel came forward, the doctor rose to protest. "I'm imploring you; think about this. If you put him on a ship, he won't survive."

In the whirlwind of events that followed, Emanuel had to steel and ground himself to keep from betraying discordant thoughts. The mission had to come first, he told himself repeatedly. He couldn't risk this decision, not this time when it was his very first responsibility and Lu had entrusted him with seeing it through to the end. The ensigns on the ship had high hopes pinned on him and he wasn't about to let them down as well.

After some persuasion and the angry barbs exchanged, the doctor also was brought aboard the ship and they were soon ready to disembark. High noon was far behind them, but there was still plenty of daylight left. "90 degrees to port. Unfurl to half-sail and set course due south. We'll make up some lost ground before sunset."

In the captain's quarter's, the broken boy was stowed with his father, cousin of Baron Reis by his side. The doctor monitoring closely, the ship started to ebb and weave as they set out for Nanohana.

It was needless to say that Emanuel found it harder to rest easy once the trip began. He kept an eye open for pirates above deck all along the way, retreating to the Captain's quarters only to check up on Rio's condition. He wasn't usually the sort to let things get under his skin nor fold easily from having to make tough calls. He grit his teeth as a young street urchin. He made sacrifices to keep his life and ambition going. And yet, a part of him felt sympathetic to the young boy's plight.

Shaking his head, he emptied his thoughts and focused on what was ahead of him. At the helm, he had placed Lawson while Orson was up in the crow's nest. The other three he had assigned on standby below deck to keep order. All the cannons were at the ready. The sun had set below the horizon so they turned off the lights for the night.

They were stretched thin for space. It had been quite a hassle even to persuade the nobles to settle for the cramped quarters. Emanuel had given up using the captain's quarters so that the noble's son could be given at least some comfort.

For supper, Emanuel had nothing more than a piece of stale bread with some cheese and a bit of water to wash it down. The Enforcer was well-stocked with food and drinks, but he didn't feel like eating much. His stomach was in no condition and the mood on-board was somber to say the least. The nobles seemed to have some level of confidence in them, though it varied by person. Baron Reis had soured at the thought of bringing his brother's ailing son aboard while Minister Foillinger had been profusely grateful and thanked him personally.

Among him and the others, they put on airs to keep the peace and allow everyone to sleep at night. At first, some had questioned him on his youth and he was forced to assuage their concerns. He left out that a Marine captain was supposed to also be on-board, but when both Reis and Foillinger pushed him on it, he managed to weasel in a satisfactory excuse.

Topside was dark and a little chilly, though Emanuel still found himself staring out at the blackness and leaning up against the mast to support himself. His eyelids grew heavy and he soon slumped to the ground, thinking he would rest for a little bit. His breathing steadied and even though it wasn't an entirely comfortable position to be resting in, his body fell back and soon blacked out.

For a while, it seemed pretty peaceful. The waves smoothing softly over the bow of the ship made a peaceful, soothing sound almost. The crisp wind over his face like a wet cloth cleansing the weariness from his cheeks. Though his confidence had seen him through the interview, being placed on the spot like this had taken a hefty toll.

The sky was blacked out completely and the dipping waves made the ship rock and dip calmly, the ideal place to snooze. They were almost on open sea, besides the coast line far behind them. Some time had been lost, but at best they would at least reach halfway by morning if they keep up a good pace.

The night watch walked the deck of the Enforcer while the nobles slept below in confined spacing, but even they wouldn't see what was about to happen. Maybe if they had been more observant, they maybe would've spotted a rather large winged beast over their heads carrying a small cannonball in its talons. When it released, the explosive sphere of iron plummeted almost straight downward and exploded on the top deck close to the main mast.

It sent Emanuel yelping and flying backwards before skidding to a stop against the guardrail. The shock winded him and for a few seconds he was too groggy to move or get on his feet. After a moment, he managed to right himself on all fours to standing. What had happened? An explosion?

Gazing aloft for any sign of the threat, there was no sign of any attackers until suddenly he was alerted by a flapping of wings from overhead and a deep-throated cawing. Then the seas started to part and several ships pulled out from behind the rocks into full view.

From the small caravel to their left side, someone loudly cleared their throat and there was a loud coughing and than a boisterous haranguing noise between several voices. Emanuel grabbed the nearest lantern, but there was no need as the ship suddenly lit up with lights and torches. Front and center, he could clearly see the haggard man wearing a black coat and looking disheveled, sickly, and clearly drunk as his gait was off-balance and stuttering. In his right hand was a rather unique-looking banjo, smothered in what was most likely blood. He started speaking with a boisterous, delayed accent.

"Yo! Kaigun! Out for a midnight stroll I see! What a coincidence... I was just (burp) out for a little walk too and thought.. why not wake'em up and let them here my new song so I have an audience! It's goin' ta be number #1 on my next hit list... so... now that I've got'yer attention... allow me to present to ya to the very first hit song of the ... what was our name again? Oh right, we're the Redneck Pirates! And maa name... is "Legendary" Joseph B. Silverman!"

He almost fell over himself again before regurgitating the contents of his stomach into the abyss of the sea below before bringing up a chair and cradling the instrument under his left arm. The man began tuning the instrument as Emanuel leaned up against the rail, staring blankly at this strange situation in front of them.

There was a screw loose in his head most certainly, but this played to their advantage. Was he just this stupid or extremely drunk? Either way, it seemed he was convinced of his own stardom so Emanuel kept the guns loaded and held his signal back.

The impact had woken up everyone, but it seemed like they had avoided severe damage besides some of the wood being slightly scorched. "Oh yeah... giimme that song... just one more time." His fingers began with a first strum so poorly and so drunkenly the rest of the song had no rhythm and the singing was so slurred even Emanuel felt the need to cringe and hold his ears, lest they fall off.

♫ A long, long time ago...
I can still remember... sometimes, maybe ... when I'm in the mood how that harlot... used to make me smile
And I knew if I dropped pants...  that I could make her table dance.
And maybe just be happy... for a while. ♫

♫ But her father caught us and made me shiver
My feet went cold and hands would quiver
Bad marines were on the doorstep
I had to take one more step ♫

♫ I can't remember at all if I cried...
With all my might I wished I might...
I broke wind and thought deeeep inside...
This day... (burp) My Daisy.. died ♫"

As soon as the drunken and wild banjo strumming paused for a moment, it was broken by a round of obnoxious clapping from Emanuel. "Sad story, but I don't have time to hear the rest of it. Cannons at the ready... Fire!"

By then, the ensigns had prepped the cannons and were ready to fire. The sudden blasting of gunpowder ripped the night apart and sent the ship of the Redneck Pirates up in flames along with Joseph Silverman and his bloody banjo. Now there was one less ship blocking their path now. Emanuel pursed his lips and thought of one last closing line he didn't say. They were hicks and the playing was piss-poor, but at least the went out with a bang.

"All losses in this world are due to a lack of ability."
As soon as the one pest had been removed, the rest of the ships went into a cursing frenzy. How they managed to survive as Pirates, Emanuel would have liked to know because it seemed like the lot of them had consumed way too much alcohol and were waving iron swords and rakes at them.

That still left the fact that there were a lot of them and Emanuel hadn't forgotten about the winged bird lingering overhead. That would cause trouble if they didn't make an effort at a response. "Orson, keep an eye on the bird overhead from up in the crow's nest and shoot at it if it gets too close again. Lawson, turn us a little more to starbord. Reload all cannons and prepare for another volley. Our targets are those ships."

The wind had died down since this afternoon, leaving only a crisp breeze. Even still, they could handle this situation if they kept calm and planned their moves out. The bird overhead was the biggest threat and would have to be dealt with quickly. With Lawson taking up that role, he could focus his attention on directing the upcoming battle.

There were three ships left and all of them were advancing quickly.  Several were preparing to fire shots already, but their orientation would put them at a difficult angle and distance to aim from off the bow of the foremost ship. Likewise, this wasn't going to be very simple for them either. Timing was everything here.

They were first to turn thanks to the favorable current and winds. On Emanuel's signal, the three Marines on ready aimed and let loose. The cannonballs tore through shattered and luckily set it alight. Overhead, Emanuel began to hear gunshots from Orson's rifle. With any luck, he could shoot him down and that would be the end of the problem.

The Enforcer, though not very heavy and lacking in artillery power, should've been enough to gobble them down. The wind was at their back and in his hands, he could capitalize on the fact that these hicks were seemingly very new to manning and coordinating a few ships. Either that or they were also extremely drunk.

From the bird's point of view, things weren't going very well. His comrades had proven that they weren't exactly prepared when it came to taking on a Marine ship, even a small one that looked like easy prey. And though the gunshots continued to ring around him, he decided to take matters into his own hands.

All Emanuel had on him was a small one-handed spear and he was heavily invested in issuing his next directions. Ignoring the man in the crow's nest, the bird swooped down and quickly grabbed the young man by the arm and lifted him off.

Grabbed and shuttled off his feet, they soared through the open night air towards dry land. Emanuel yelped and his eyes widened in surprise before crying out. He dangled from its talons, yelling and suddenly realizing he'd miscalculated. His throat emitted a guttering sound and his mind went blank.

In panic, he grabbed for the spear he held at his side and began to thrust upward at the winged bastard like his life depended on it. They were high above water, but without him to man the battle, it would be difficult for the ensigns to keep the edge.

Though the sensation of being without solid ground made tears well up in his eyes and life flash in front of his features, he pushed it aside and continued to stab and twist his body. After a bit of focus, he managed to gain enough leverage over the talon to twist and then drive his spear directly into the bird's breast.

Without waiting, they went into a sudden dive. Their forms hurdled and spun aloft wildly. Emanuel continued stabbing wherever he could get a decent grip. Blood spurted from numerous wounds, but he didn't care. The thrashing became all the more rough until finally all movement ceased and they hit the water with a loud splash.

The water soothed him immediately, like a breath of fresh air in his lungs. He swam without any problems, kicking about frantically once he remembered the direction of the ship. The battle was still going on, but it seemed that the Enforcer had managed to sink one more ship and without taking further damage.

Hauling himself aboard, he was greeted enthusiastically by the several nobles that had been watching from the top deck. His eyes glazed over for a moment as the last standing ship mounted a final angry charge before the cannons were able to be fired one more time, sending it to the depths.

Night passed without any further happenings. After that ordeal, Emanuel was happy to be able to sleep. In the night though, something else also happened. He walked back into the captain's quarters after his fight, brimming with sweat and feeling like his head had lightened by a few pounds. It wouldn't be long now. They would reach Nanohana in a few hours and his mission will have been completed.

Inside the main quarters however, the boy he had brought aboard the Enforcer at risk to his health, was laying down with the doctor at his side, looking more than a little grim. "I told you... he wouldn't survive if you brought him aboard this ship."

His legs gave out first. The thought of panic would come later. A myriad of thoughts washed through him like a waterfall. Sadness being the most prominent one, but exhaustion overtook him and he couldn't even muster a half-hearted response. Instead, he recalled the parting words of Lu Dahn.

"We all serve the World Government as Marines, but a man should also serve himself and see his own personal desires fulfilled."

That reminded him... what did he want? Why was he doing all this to begin with? As he fell into a deep sleep with Nanohana just coming over the horizon, he mentally noted to remind himself to look into that when he awoke.
