Elias sat down at the table inside of his banana leaf hut. A hut hewed from instantly grown banana trees, taking the leaves and slathering them with sap, putting them together in a geometric cylindrical shape followed by a conic roof on the top of it. He lived out here in the Jaya Forest right now, outside of Mock Town. ANd why did he? No one wanted him, save for the Phantom Raiders. He was a mark that made people targeted by the marines whatever pirate ship he got on. It seemed that someone wanted him home, and he had a good guess who. But, he was getting distracted by his own thoughts again. He had to work on this work log. A journal of sorts, something to catalog all of the actions he was taking today for the forestry restoration project he took upon himself. You see, the other day, he was accosted by a pyromaniac pirate prick that wanted to pitch a pyre in the forest to try and smoke Elias out of his home. So here he sat, opening up that journal to start jotting things down.

Entry 1
Alright, so, I'm sitting here at the table trying to gather my thoughts about everything that had happened. Fusebeard. Yeah, that was his name. Fusebeard the Pyro Privateer as he is more commonly known as. He gathered up a group of guys, a bunch of of the sort that didn't have anything better to do you know? The kind that were happy to help out with an attempt on someone's life just because it sounded like something to do at the time. Honestly, I don't know why pirates like that are out on the ocean. There are those types, and then there are the kind like Yuurei or the Captain... And I'm getting distracted again. I have to stop. Okay, focus. Why are you still writing this down Elias? Maybe because you like to write out your thoughts? This isn't your notebook about people. This is your work log! Get to work!

He leaned back in his chair, his hood falling off of his head while he groaned to himself. "COme on. Come on Elias, you gotta focus. But no Elias, this is work. And work isn't really something you want to do. But it's the forest. You like the forest. I know I like the forest. Okay, fine. Fine! Alright! I can do this!" He leaned forward and over his notebook where he brought his pen to the paper and started to write. Thirty minutes later, he had a drawing of a tree on fire in the notebook next to his first journal entry.

Entry 2
Okay, I'm going to go for a walk around the forest and size up the amount of damage that has happened. I'll be back in a little bit. I'm guessing around eighty one percent of the Jaya forest remains. This shouldn't take too long, but the whole problem of fixing it is going to be figuring out how to grow regular trees that don't throw people fifty feet in to the air.

Entry 3
So I was about right. I couldn't tell by walking around the forest, but I went around and it looks to be roughly a fifth of the forest was lost to the fire before it started to pour rain. Judging by how much was taken away, I could start with the very edge and test some stuff out there. There's good news and bad news though. The good news is that I know I can do this. I think. At least, in theory, it is gonna work. I just need to practice making some trees and get the hang of it before I can make it all look normal. Maybe, if I take some samples of the trees that are still standing and some of the burnt trees, and combine them with a seed I have. Or. OR! OR! OR! Idea! Here's an idea. What if I found an acorn or seed or whatever grew the trees here, and then cultivated that with one of my seeds at the same time? It could be worth a shot. But it would take a lot of cross breeding and diluting to get it back to normal. Which sucks. Which isn't even the bad news. The whole thing sucks. Ugh. Bluh. And that brings me to two different bad news points. First and foremost is getting rid of the burnt debris and stumps. I could make my Trampolia seeds blow them out of the way. ANd the second bad point are my cross bred plants. They'll be hybrids until I dilute them enough. The whole fifty-fifty child, then a seventy five-twenty five, and so on and so forth. This forest, the part I regrow, it won't ever be the same, but, that's kind of not my fault. Anyways, I'm gonna go do that thing I said I was gonna do now.

The next entry in the journal comes within the same day of the previous one, where Elias has returned to state his findings. Sitting down at the table, he opened up the journal and drew a rough diagram of the forest in the notebook. A big spot of it shaded in to indicate the burnt up region.

Entry 4
This should be easy, clearing up all of the debris that is. At most, I can get it done by noon tomorrow. I just need to take time to get new Trampolia seeds. The whole process requires making Trampolia pop up out of the ground, waiting for them to wilt away and gathering the seeds left behind. i have a surplus, but I could do with using them as a means to restock. These seeds, they're really powerful, but the amount of damage they can do, you have to be careful with them. The big problem with them is that whenever I get a new seed, I don't know what it does. So I have to test it out. And there's no way to test them unless I go out to a nice private open space. And that is bad in a forest or urban area. I'm getting distracted again. This is annoying. I should talk to Kouse about getting myself some sort of medicine to keep my attention straight. Anyways, by the next time I write in this book, I will have cleared out the area.

Elias sat down at the table the next day, around noon, with a big grin on his face, apparently something grand had happened today. He went through something with that Trampolia stunt. And now he was writing it down in the book, in the only way that he could possibly.

Entry 5
So, I don't know if you have seen this, whoever you are reading this if my notes are ever published or made public, but, you ever see a stump get uprooted from the sandy dirt and sent flying up in to the air and in to the distance? I saw it today, dozens of times. It was, actually kind of dangerous now that I think about it. What I would give to have that human compass ability or whatever it is that Yuurei has. That thing he has, the one where he can tell where everyone around him is? But I would want that for people and incoming danger. If that's how that works then cool! Anyways, back to the topic at hand. I went around the burnt up forest today, shooting out Trampolia seeds here and there, watching them grow in to that big blueish-purple dome of springy sap. And, when there aren't a bunch of trees to keep them constrained, they grow BIG. They sent things flying, more than a hundred feet in one case. I wonder if anyone in Mock Town got hit. Would they blame me? They probably wood, heh, pun. But yeah, here's the diagram so far.

He drew arrows from the entry to a new diagram of the forest, where the forest was shaded out the other day in the diagram, now had a large outline of that area with several colored in circles to denote that the area was clear, but the Trampolia plants remained, for now.

Entry 6
So I couldn't really start doing anything else right now. At least, nothing really important other than go around the forest and collect regular seeds. It's kind of funny to see just how small normal plant stuff can be, or how oddly shaped. My seeds are all little balls. They're all colored special and with different designs on them. These are just, plain. Kind of boring really. But, they grow in to trees. That much I can tell. Jungle trees usually bare fruits of some kind. And the seeds from the fruits help to grow the trees. I'm going to do some practice later, see if planting a tree seed and my plant seeds together will warrant something different. I wonder, how many days should it take to get the fixing of the plants right? Maybe I'll get some new Greens out of this.

Entry 7
Not much is written here, a few incoherent scribblings here and there. It looked to be written in short hand that only Elias would understand.  He apparently had spent some time out on the field working with the seeds clearly judging by how five pages of the notebook were taken up by this entry in the journal. But, instead of an actual ledger of his actions in coherent and concise sentences written out, he drew a bunch of crude pictures instead. Something to do with his Mania, it seemed that whenever he wrote this entry, he was in a state of hyper elation.  Whenever he was drawn in to these pages, he was drawn in the traditional chibi sense, throwing what looked like little black dots.  The first page showed him throwing the black dots and the next picture after it was him standing there, looking over the patch of ground where the seeds landed, over the drawing's head was a thought bubble with question mark shaped trees, wondering where they were.  Apparently, he didn't do things right this time.

The next page of Entry 7 had him sitting down, crouched even, fiddling with one of the seeds he normally worked with, and the tree seeds of the forest, trying to find a way to jerry rig them together so that he could work on cross breeding the species. Instead, the next picture was him being blown up in to the air by a crudely drawn Trampolia plant. According to the picture, he managed to trigger one of his bouncy sap seeds and send himself up in to the air, only to land in the canopy of the forest and hit several branches on his way down, judging by the picture of him walking back in to frame with a bunch of twigs sticking out of his hair.

The next picture, the last picture series at that, was him crouching down over holes in the ground, taking the time to carefully plant two seeds in each little hole. One tree seed and one Pop Green in each. Then the next frame was him sprinkling water over the planted seeds with a banana leaf used in place of a watering can, making sure that each spot was watered properly.  The third frame was him standing there in chibi form, left hand clutching his right elbow while his right hand rested over his mouth, foot tapping impatiently judging by the motion lines.  Above his head, a clock was drawn with the minute hand on the 12, the hour hand on the 8, two thirds of the clock face shaded in. Someone could only guess it took eight hours for the effects to take place because the next frame was him jumping for joy in front of a patch of half grown trees. Pop greens were an amazing thing it seemed, but when cross bred with regular plant seeds it slowed down their growth, or sped up the growth of the normal plant. Though, the trees didn't really look normal judging by the drawings!

What in the shit did I freaking write before this? I can't make heads or tails of whatever the hell I wrote. So I can only take a wild guess about what the pictures mean. I'm an idiot. Dear Reader, if you are reading this, please get a professional mind reader or something to decipher these drawings for me. I can't tell what the hell I did.

Moving on to the report, new trees have grown. In a single day, I was able to make a new form of plant life, but it cannot sustain itself for more than a day it seems. On the up side, I have plenty of new seeds to practice cross breeding with. I am calling these Half-way Hybrids. Judging by the fifty-fifty split between their appearance of a normal tree on the pop green I cross bred them with.

Going by this, I'm going to make some seventy-five percent plant, twenty-five percent pop greens by taking these new seeds and crossing them with regular trees. The scorched earth is looking better on a side note, and all of the debris has been cleared. So I have one of my major tasks I set out to do completed. Hooray!

In all seriousness, I think this should work out, but the problem is going to be determining how far from Pop Greens I can go in order to get the desired result. I have a few theories, so it might be worth keeping some reserve seeds of every new variant I get on hand. I'll report back in with results later today or tomorrow.

The next entry seems to be dated close to midnight.

Entry 9
Alright, the further from pop greens you breed the seeds, the longer they take to grow. Granted, they're still growing within the same day. The major problem I'm faced with is not knowing how soon they will deteriorate. My current thought is that the closer to actual trees these become, the longer they will last. Ultimately, I want to see them able to last years, while growing within a week. Or sooner if I can make that the case. There's gotta be some sort of sweet spot I can hit.

Anyways, it's late. I'll see if the trees have died out by the morning and clear the debris with Trampolia seeds again if need be.

Well the trees are gone, as expected. Unexpected news though, these trees are producing different seeds. Like when you breed different animals, and get different variants. Example to follow:
Tabby cats, domestics. You can have a multitude of colors similar to the two parents, or colors vastly different. With plants it only requires one parent and making more to follow. This however, is a product of two plants, and this one plant has now produced two different seeds. I am going to have to study this further from this point. I'll check back in later.

Entry 11
You ever get smacked by a tree? And no, dear reader, whosoever reads this log, I do not mean running through the forest like some wild man raised by monkeys with a proclivity for slapstick comedy upon collision with tree bark. I mean actually being slapped. I went to check on the new trees I grew with some of the new seeds right? Well, some of them weren't exactly trees. They were giant stacks that lead to blooming flowers. And while they were plants, they had the girth and sturdiness of a tree. As such I have dubbed them as trees. I have also dubbed them as assholes.

They behave a lot like Devils, a special seed I have learned about. Except they just slap things with their giant leaves. And they hurt. A lot. I have a giant red mark across my face. I look like some face painted islander about to give a speech about how some oppressive force will never take his freedom. Except it's in searing burning painful red. I am going to dash these seeds in the future and try the other batch.

Dear reader, I write in this book today not to give an update on the state of the trees, but rather to say I have discovered something interesting with these weird hybrid seeds I have accidentally made through the cross breeding program. They don't attack each other, but they go after anything larger than the native animals. It seems that I have found a way to keep the forest protected from deforestation if I ever get off this island.

Jaya, an island filled with pirate crews. Crews that all have ambitions and goals. People that want to see the world. I arrived here with one of them, after their ship was nearly sunk. But, I can't get off the island, at least, I thought I couldn't get off the island. But now, I have a crew to leave with. It's really hard to put in to words. It's serendipity? It's a miracle? It's fate? It's--Befuddling. To think that on the one island I thought my adventure would end, I would find the people I could see the world with? I, am grateful to say the least.

The page seems to have wrinkles on it from dried water or something wet having hit the page in small little spots while it was being written.

Entry 13
Living monster trees are still assholes. That is all.

Entry 14
Nothing to report, the change from each generation of tree to the next seems to be slowing down. Maybe I should introduce a fresh pure Pop Green in to the plant breeding in the next round? I have to estimate the current tree to green ratio is four to one. Eighty to Twenty. If I introduced a new green, that SHOULD put me at a ratio of sixty to forty. It will take me further from my goal, but it's worth introducing fresh Green DNA in to the program just to make them have more readiness to dilute further. I'm crazy, I know.

Entry 15
I'm close. I'm close! I know it! It's gonna work! I just have to-- I have to-- What do I have to do? I'm sitting here, free writing, just writing exactly what comes to my mind. And I was here to do something. Those birds tried eating my seeds again. I shot them with a trampolia. You. Should. Have. SEEN. The feather fly!

Anyways, I have to write something today. I did a thing. What did I do? Oh, right. I did... Right! I was able to make one giant tree! It didn't produce much in the lines of new seeds, but, wait, yeah that's right! The seeds! The new seeds! This generation is so much better! You wouldn't believ-- Wait, I should tell you exactly what's going on. The seeds. I made new seeds on accident! I already told you that, but the size of them. THE SIZE.

Pop green seeds, right? The things I normally shoot and grow giant plants with? Well, get this. They're no bigger than your pinkie finger's nail! Even smaller! They are never bigger. And my program? I was able to make ones now, they're the size of acorns! That's more than three times the mass! They even look like acorns! That's a tell tale sign of what can be called a tree seed! I have done it! Maybe. I think. Did I? I should go test. But I had to come here and tell the book, no, you, the reader, I had to tell you what I did today. The thing I did with the see-wait I already told you that. Okay, bye, I'm gonna go plant some of these and wait!

Entry 16
It's been a day since I planted the acorns, I'm calling them acorns now by the way. I planted half of them. So far, any seeds I have planted have grown within seconds to eight hours at most. This marks the twenty four hour mark! Did they not take? Are they duds? I mean, if they're normal plants they are gonna take a long while to grow at all. But, I'm so used to the Pop Gree-what was that? Okay there's some noise outside. I'll check back in just a minute.

Entry 17
So, I grew trees. But. They kind of. Flew? Not like birds or anything. But it's like they had fireworks shoved up inside of them. I have never seen anything like it. But...Yeah. I just sent trees about two hundred feet in to the sky because something was fizzing out from under them. I'm sorry to whoever's house they smash. I'll keep trying. Tomorrow. Some people are kind of mad. I'm going into hiding. Bye. See you tomorrow!

Entry 18
I'm getting close. I managed to make the trees relatively similar in size and shape to the rest of the trees and foliage in the Jaya forest. Thing is, they're still prone to wanting to lash out sometimes. I don't know if these seeds I normally use are actually living creatures or just hyper evolved plants, but they seem to know when things that aren't plants are nearby, and attack them. It's worth investigating another day. Anyways, time for a chart update! Take a look!

The following picture of Entry 18 was much like the ones from before, an amorphous looking crudely drawn blob with a legend in the upper left hand corner denoting what part of the forest was normal with a checkerboard pattern, and what part of the forest was new with a polka dot pattern. Four fifths of the drawing was checkerboard. One fifth was polka dot. It looked like whatever it was he was doing it was working!

Entry 19
So, I think I'm almost done. That last batch of trees managed to last three days, that's exponentially better than one day. Right? Right. I'm going to try a few more times, and, if these things can last longer than three days, they should be self sustaining, or at least the seeds will self plant when they fall out of the decaying trees and regrow later. Only time will tell at this point. I'll check back in four days to be sure.

So, it's worked. I can't believe it, but, it's worked. It's been five days. I had to hide out for another two days because another crew came looking for some form of divine retribution. Something about how because I'm making the forest filled with my freaky plants that I am tainting the island with my mark. First I'm The Black Spot. Now the forest is the Spawn of the Black Spot. Next thing I know they're going to blame me for the ocean waves rocking their ship. Look, it's not my fault okay? They're just paranoid weaklings who can't fend for themselves. Why am I the one that has to bear the cross for them when I have never even met most of these people?

I'm getting off topic. I'm here to report the final progress of my tests and reforestation efforts. At first, the seeds would not take naturally, and I had to force a cross breed between the tree seeds with my instant growth monster seeds. Following that I had to remove the instant growth DNA from the next generation by continually cross breeding with natural plant life again and again. The further I got from the instant growth, the longer it took to grow, no surprise there. But after several generations of plant life removed, they stopped having any growth effects whatsoever and even were stunted when they did grow.

After reintroducing the instant growth in to the DNA for the next generation and following the same pattern, I was able to make fully grown trees, much larger than the original trees should have been. So I continued down this path and finally, on this final generation, have grown normal sized trees. They also are able to fend for themselves with something of a cognizance of the world around them.

Following five days of the last planting, the trees have since wilted, but dropped acorns that buried themselves in the ground and took to growing yet again. They are able to grow themselves at this point, and I am confident in reporting that they are self sufficient. This ends my log on reforestation efforts on a tropical island. And, if anyone reads this, please for the love of the sea, do not publish those kid drawings I put in here, or those times I wasn't in the right state of mind.
